The Objective

Office vertical retailers, including Staples and Office Depot, were looking for a promotion to help drive retail sales and increase the dollar-per-order at checkout.

The Solution

Spend & Get Promotion:
Reward customers based on a minimum total spend. With one retailer, the “Spend $75 or More and Receive a Free $25 Restaurant.com Gift Certificate” offer was featured in the Sunday sales circular. The offer encouraged consumers to visit the retailer, redeem the coupon, and spend an in-store minimum of $75 for their free $25 Restaurant.com Gift Certificate.

SKU-Based Promotion:
Reward customers for purchasing a specific item. One retailer offered a free $25 Restaurant.com Gift Certificate with the purchase of two or more toner cartridges.

The Results

One retailer tested the “Spend & Get” promotion for one week, in three markets, with 90,000 certificates. The success of the test led to a full rollout in which the promotion was extended to two weeks, expanded to more than 1,300 stores with 430,000 certificates offered. Each gift certificate garnered a minimum of $75 in retail sales — less the certificate cost — generating $30 million in retail sales.
These retailers and many others continue to use Restaurant.com Gift Certificates to generate incremental revenue.
